Typical Costs of Calling from a UK Landline

When you make any call from a UK landline, the cost of the call depends on the type of number you are ringing.  The cost can also depend on things like the tariff, the time of day and the prices set by your own phone provider.  But here are some rough ideas about the typical call costs for the most common types of numbers in the UK.


These are landline numbers and 01 or 02 numbers are based in a geographic region.  Calls to these cost 12-14p a minute. If you have evening and weekend allowances, these calls will be free during these times.  If you have any time free minutes, the calls should be free at any time of the day.

055, 056

These are VOIP or corporate numbers and calls normally cost anywhere from 2p a minute to 13p per minute.  These numbers are rarely included in any allowances.


070 numbers are known as personal numbers and calls can cost up to 51p per minute.  These numbers are never included in free minutes or allowances.


071, 072, 073, 074, 075, 077, 078, 079

These are UK mobile phone numbers and calls to these from a landline will cost 14-20p a minute.  Many newer tariffs will let you ring these numbers for free when you have inclusive free minutes on your contract.


These are pagers and calls to them can cost up to 30p a minute.  They are never included in any landline free call allowances.

0800, 0808

These are the freephone numbers that are free to call from landlines and from mobiles.  This means it doesn’t matter what kind of calling plan you have, the calls will be free.

0843, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 0872

These are service numbers that do have a surcharge involved in calling them.  The cost of calling these can vary from 11-26p a minute as well as a 13p per call access charge.  These may occasionally be included in free call allowances but check with your provider before ringing


These are the top level, premium rate numbers that cost the most to call.  The provider sets the rate and it can be anywhere from 11p a minute to £3.73 and as much as £6 per call access charge.  These lines are never included in any free call allowances.

Call connection charges

Any call that has a charge associated with usually also have a connection charge or a setup charge.  These can be 19-22p but are usually removed when calling 084, 087 and 09 numbers. However, when you ring these lines, you will be charged for at least one minute, even if you are on the call for less than this.

Tariff notes

This information is the general pricing guide for landlines from the major providers including BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin as of December 2017.  If you ring numbers 01481, 01534 and 01624 there will be charges as they are for the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The same applies to some 07 numbers.
